Very different from the show last summer at The Fox Theatre. I think that most of the crowd had come to see Richard Thompson, or were season ticket holders. There didn't seem to be many Mann-enites in attendance. In fact, some people LEFT during her set! I know! I know! The high-point was when she had four folks from the audience come up on stage to fill in for the missing drummer on a performance of "Frankenstein".
Aimee Mann’s Lost In Space On SACD

Sebastopol, CA – Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab (MFSL) is ecstatic to announce the release of Aimee Mann’s "Lost In Space" on its critically acclaimed Ultradisc UHR™ SACD series.

Already garnering rave reviews, Aimee Mann’s fourth solo release Lost In Space is a fine choice for Mobile Fidelity’s GAIN 2™ (Greater Ambient Information Network) mastering process. The process which enabled the maximum amount of musical information to be extracted from Ms. Mann’s original analog 1/2" ORIGINAL MASTER RECORDING™. This information was then stored transparently as pure Direct Stream Digital (DSD) and delivered to end users as a dual layer, CD compatible hybrid SACD.

Addressing themes of addiction and social misconnections in songs such as "High on Sunday 51" and "Invisible Ink," Mann and producer Michael Lockwood sought to create an aural environment that matched the album’s lyrics. "As we were recording, we started to put sounds in that we referred to as 'space noise,'" Mann explains, "which obviously tied in with the title of the record and the theme of the songs, which is feeling isolated and cut off from other people and yourself, trying to make connections to people and failing."

The release of Lost In Space on Ultradisc UHR SACD illustrates Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab’s expanding commitment to deliver the best of cutting edge new music to the audiophile market.

Released July 8, 2003 on Ultradisc UHR SACD (UDSACD 2021)

Distributed by KOCH in the USA

I've always found it to be a cheesy topic when you start talking about your favorite song/lyrics from the artist in question, so I apologize in advance.

Right now the song "Ray" is really getting to me...

Ray, as of today I can't say things will ever be the same--and that could be a shame. 'Cause though I think I know another lonely exile when I see one (and you appear to be one), still...

I'm playing it down 'cause I could really be found if you've got it to spare. I'm playing it cool, but it's terribly cruel 'cause I ought to be there.

And, Ray, what can I say? You don't know me and it's just wishful thinking to keep myself from sinking. Hence, no evidence to support any theory I have handy that you could understand me. And so...

I'm playing it down 'cause I could really be found if you've got it to spare. I'm playing it cool, but it's terribly cruel 'cause I ought to be there--'Cause you're as bad off as me!

And Ray, can we repay ourselves for days that we've lost through indecision with one of recognition? If so, then here I go 'cause some things you know and some you just believe in--and hope it comes out even.

...

I have a real hard time parsing the last verse, so any help in that regard is appreciated. Do I detect a shred of hope that a relationship is possible? Am I interpreting it correctly that she's going to take a risk?

Can an artist come up with such anguished thoughts without having lived them?
